The Animal-Free Safety Assessment (AFSA) Collaboration is a unique multi-sector partnership between non-profit, corporate, and philanthropic leaders working to advance acceptance and use of animal-free safety science as a gold standard worldwide, for better protecting human and environmental health for a spectrum of products including cosmetics, chemicals and biologicals. AFSA stands apart from similar collaborations in both the scope of our activities (multi-sector and global) and the range of tactics we utilize. Our approach is based on leveraging the complementary expertise, specialties, and global reach of our multi-stakeholder members needed to accelerate a shift toward an animal-free paradigm.

Established in 1993, ARDF promotes alternatives to the use of animals in biomedical research, testing and education. The foundation has awarded over $4.5M through its Annual Open Research Grant program. It also sponsors scientific meetings and presents the Cave Award for outstanding achievements in advancing alternative methods. ARDF’s special program, the Alternatives in Research Challenge, focuses science funding exclusively in the area of alternative methods for biomedical research.

The Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA) has been strategically promoting alternatives to the use of animals in science, aligning Brazil with the most advanced international practices in animal welfare, ethical science, and technological innovation.

The MMA played a key role in the approval of the law (PL-3062/2022) that bans cosmetic testing on animals in Brazil, marking a historic civilizational milestone and harmonizing national legislation with the best global practices. Additionally, the Ministry is funding an innovative research project at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) to produce collagen from donkeys without the need for animal slaughter, through cellular agriculture processes—combining science, respect for life, and sustainable development.

By supporting the 13th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences (WC13), the MMA reaffirms its commitment to scientific progress aligned with animal protection, contributing to sustainable and ethical solutions that promote health, well-being, and biodiversity.
