Octavio Presgrave
Chair
Octavio Presgrave is coordinator of BraCVAM Centro Brasileiro para Validação de Métodos Alternativos Brazilian Centre for Validation of Alternative Methods. Besides, he is a Biologist (Universidade Gama Filho), with a Master's degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology (IOC/FIOCRUZ) and a PhD in Health Surveillance (INCQS/FIOCRUZ). Both his dissertation and thesis were in the area of alternative methods. He works at the Institute of Science and Technology in Biomodels (ICTB), a unit of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ).
CHANTRA ESKES
Co-Chair
After studying food sciences and engineering and obtaining a PhD in neurotoxicology, Chantra Eskes has spent over 20 years developing, validating, and promoting new methods for chemical safety assessment in Europe and internationally. Her work has led to several international guidelines that reduce animal testing. Currently, she leads the risk assessment team at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and has been active in various expert groups and scientific committees. She has authored over 60 scientific publications.

Luciene Balottin
Luciene Bottentuit López Balottin is a Scientific Researcher at the National Institute of Metrology, Quality, and Technology (Inmetro), Brazil. She holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, an M.Sc. in Biophysics, and a B.Sc. in Biology. At Inmetro, her research focuses on Alternative Methods to Animal Experimentation and their implications for regulatory acceptance and the safety evaluation of chemicals, nanomaterials, and botanical extracts. She is actively involved in the implementation, dissemination, development, and validation of Alternative Methods, particularly in their intersection with Metrology and Conformity Assessment.
João Carlos Basílio
João Carlos Basilio has worked in the CT&F sector since the 70s, becoming managing partner of Perfumaria Rastro Ltda. He is the executive president of ABIHPEC since 1995, and of SIPATESP since 1989. He holds roles in BRAMEX, CIESP, CASIC, and FIESP, and participates in COMPEM/CNI and AEB councils.
Cristiane Caldeira
Cristiane Caldeira earned her degree in Biological Sciences from UNIRIO (1994), a master’s in Public Health from ENSP/FIOCRUZ (1998), and a Ph.D. in Health Surveillance from INCQS/FIOCRUZ (2015). She is a Senior Technologist at the ICTB/Fiocruz, focusing on teaching, research, and innovation. Caldeira teaches in the Master’s program in Laboratory Animal Sciences and is a member of BraCVAM. Her expertise includes Toxicology, Alternative Methods to animal use, Method Validation, Laboratory Animal Sciences, and Quality Control in sanitary environments and products.
Andrezza Canavez
Andrezza has a degree in Pharmacy, safety assessor at the Department of Toxicology at the University of Vrije in Brussels (Belgium), posgraduation in International relations from UFPR, MBA in Business Management from FAE. She has 20 years of experience in the cosmetics industry, currently manager of the product Safety area: including Pre-Clinical, Alternative Methods (in vitro, in silico/in chemico), Clinical product research, Environmental Safety and Cosmetovigilance (post-market surveillance) of the Boticario Group
Carolina Catarino
Bioprocess Engineer and Biotechnologist with a Master's in Clinical Analysis from the University of São Paulo and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (USA). Actively involved in outreach initiatives promoting alternative testing methods, her expertise focuses on developing reconstructed skin models using 3D bioprinting and applying alternative methods for the safety assessment of materials. Currently serving as Principal Scientist at Grupo Boticário, leading the alternative methods laboratory and preclinical evaluation team.
José Mauro Granjeiro
Graduated in Dentistry (1989), with a Master's in Biochemistry (1994) and PhD in Chemistry (1998) from the State University of Campinas. Post-doctoral studies in Cellular and Molecular Biology (1999-2000) at the University of São Paulo. Senior Specialist at Inmetro and Associate Professor at Fluminense Federal University. Focused on Tissue Bioengineering, Biomaterials, and Nanotechnology. Coordinated the Nanotox Network and RENAMA. Served on the National Biotechnology Council and the Nanotechnology Advisory Council and coordinated CONCEA (2014-2016).
Camila Sgrignoli Januario
Camila Sgrignoli Januario, a political scientist specializing in program development and international relations, is the Program Manager at the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She has extensive experience in grants management, strategic planning, and cross-cultural collaboration. Camila has developed educational programs, managed advisory boards, and organized major events like the Microphysiological Systems World Summit. She previously worked as a Project Management Consultant at the Lieber Institute and as a Public Assistant in Brazil. She is completing her Master’s in Public Administration at the University of Baltimore.
Elias Silva de Jesus
Graduated in accounting sciences, specialization in controlling and finance, specialization in management of public health organizations, master in public administration. I have 28 years of experience in managing private businesses, having been a federal public servant for 14 years.
Leila Leal
Prof Leila Leal has a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, a Master’s, and a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), and a postdoc in Bioequivalence of topical drug products from the University of Bath/UK. She is an Associate Professor at UFPE, a technical consultant at Hygeia Pharma and B&S Pharmaceutical Innovations and a Researcher at the Center for Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Development (NUDFAC/ UFPE). She is currently responsible for the BioAltern-Agro Network, represents RENAMA’s Associated Laboratories and is member of the Technical Board of Health of FACEPE. Dr. Leal has 20 years of experience developing pharmaceutical products and performance tests in medicines, cosmetics, and pesticides.

Carolina Barbara Nogueira de Oliveira
Carolina Barbara Nogueira de Oliveira graduated in Biomedicine from Federal Fluminense University (UFF) and holds a PhD in Sciences and Biotechnology focused on alternative methods for toxicological assays. Since 2017, she has been working at FIOCRUZ and actively engaged in the development of alternative methods to the use of animals. Currently, she works at the Brazilian Center for Validation of Alternative Methods (BraCVAM), where she promotes the adoption of alternative methods to animal testing across Brazil. Her expertise lies in Alternative Methods, Toxicology, Zebrafish, and Methods Validation.
Julcemara de Oliveira
Julcemara Gresselle de Oliveira has a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from the Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) and a postgraduate degree in Health Surveillance from the Centro de Pós-Graduação Oswaldo Cruz. She represents Anvisa (the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency) in the “Working Group on Integrated Strategies for Safety Assessment of Cosmetic Ingredients” of the International Cooperation on Cosmetics Regulation (ICCR). Since 2014, she has worked as a Specialist in Health Regulation and Surveillance at Anvisa.

Marta Speck
Marta Speck has an academic background in Biological Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences. She graduated in Biological Sciences with an emphasis on Biopathology and hold a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the UFRGS. During her master’s program, she focused on studying the impact of environmental enrichment on the behavior and responses to antidepressants in mice. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Translational Medicine at UFC, further expanding her expertise and work at the interface between basic research and clinical applications.
Rodrigo De Vecchi
Rodrigo De Vecchi is the founder of EPISKIN Brazil. Besides, he is a professional scientist with a great reputation in the fields of biotechnology and cosmetology. He holds a PhD in Genetic and Molecular Biology from the University of Campinas, where his research was based on the study of human genetics and dermatogenetics within the scope of psoriasis.
His work included conducting trans-ethnic genome-wide clinical studies and immunogenetic research in rare diseases, raising the bar for the understanding of genetic factors in dermatology conditions.
Leonardo Matos
Christoph Milewski
Christoph is the Director of the Institute of Science and Technology in Biomodels (ICTB) at Fiocruz. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Industry Management and holds a Master’s in Administrative Justice. His specializations include Public Law, Clinical Immunology, and Innovation from Harvard. Christoph also has a law degree and a teaching degree in biology, with extensive experience in managing science and technology organizations in health.
Antoniana Ottoni
Antoniana Ottoni is a lawyer with a master’s degree in environmental policy by the University of Brasília. Since 2013 has been working at the Research and Toxicology Department of the Humane Society Internacional dedicating efforts to defend better legislations to protect animals. Her work to promote legislative changes in Brazil has led to key legislation as the ban of the one-year dog study for pesticides, the waiver of the target batch safety testing for veterinary vaccines and the partial ban of animal testing for cosmetics in Brazil. Her role in federal government relations brought many Brazilian and international stakeholders in this field to collaborate for the implementation of new technologies to substitute the use of animals in laboratory.
